Summer Landscape Tips

26 May Summer Landscape Tips

Well, we certainly have had a nice Spring, haven’t we? The flowers started blooming, and your grass got greener. However, the warmer months are upon us! It is never too soon to start thinking about your yard in terms of it looking its best for the summer season. Here are some tips that can help you get there:

Test Your Soil

More than land-grant schools in the U.S. have an extension service that will perform soil testing for a small fee. You can find the closest office to your house on the United States Department of Agriculture website. The results you receive will tell you about the nutrients in your soil and the soil’s pH balance. Handling it this early will help you make informed decisions about fertilizing and treating pH. If your soil has low pH, meaning it is acidic, you can spread lime now. If you have high alkaline soil, add elemental sulfur. Either way, you will benefit from spring rains, which will help the soil absorb what you’ve laid down. But you will want to tackle this task now &#; sending in samples and waiting for results can take several weeks.

Clear Leaves and Debris

While it is generally fine to leave the leaves where they are in the fall, large dense swaths of yard debris can block the sun from reaching your lawn, making it difficult for grass to sprout at all. If you did not use a leaf blower last fall, do some cleanup now. Use the collected leaves for compost. Better still, mulch the fallen leaves with the mulching kit or attachment for your mower or tractor. The churned-up clippings will feed your lawn and reduce the amount of fertilizing.

Apply Fertilizer

Bags of fertilizer display three numbers separated by hyphens. The numbers refer to the ratio among nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), in that order. Again, your soil test will let you know what nutrients your soil is lacking. For grasses planted and intended for cooler, northern climates, put down at least one application of fertilizer in spring (if you need fertilizer). Bagged fertilizer is best distributed with a spreader, either a push model or a snap-on version that attaches to your riding mower.

Repair Walkways and Edging

Winter can be brutal on pavers, walkways, and driveways. Aside from damage done by your snow blower or a plow, frost heave &#; the natural freeze-and-thaw cycle &#; can split concrete and knock stones out of whack. To keep out water and help keep a problem from worsening, seal any new gaps in concrete with concrete-crack filler. Secure loose pavers or patio stones temporarily. If the damage is extensive, consider having a landscape contractor dig up and reset the stones, making sure to start 6 inches below the soil line to minimize shifts from future frost heave. Tackling this project now, while pros are less busy, may cost a bit less than booking a repair at the height of the season.

Flower Beds

Now that you have got the practicalities of your garden makeover out of the way, you can start to get creative by planting the flower beds. Before you can plant anything, you will need to prep the beds. You can do this by digging out any weeds that you find. It is important that you dig the full root out or they will be back very quickly. Then put some compost down and start to plant some flowers. Think about planting some low-maintenance perennial plants that will come back next year. Once planted, you should add plenty of mulch around the edges to stop the weeds coming through and ruining the flower bed.

NÜRNBERG AND THE PSYCHOLOGY OF PLACE

In July, , a year after the trial of Adolf Eichmann in Jerusalem, Yale psychologist Stanley Milgram conducted one of psychology’s most famous, and controversial, experiments.  You may well have heard of it, if not here is a summary of what was involved.

Obedience to Authority

Interested in investigating whether Germans were particularly obedient to authority figures, a common explanation for the Nazi genocide at that time, Milgram advertised for participants willing to take part in a study of learning at the University. Each would be paid $4 50 for turning up.

When they arrived, each participant was paired with another person and lots were drawn to see who would be the ‘learner’ and who the ‘teacher’.

In fact, the draw was fixed to ensure the participant was always the ‘teacher’. The ‘learner’ was, in fact, an actor confederate of the psychologist, called Mr Wallace.

Punished for his Mistakes

Mr Wallace was taken into a room where electrodes were attached to his arms. The ‘teacher’ was instructed to administer electric shocks to the ‘learner’, via the electrodes, every time he made a mistake. With each mistake error, the current had to be increased up to a potentially lethal maximum of V.

A participant in the Milgram studies punishes Mr Wallace

As the ‘punishment,’ apparently, became increasingly painful, the distress of the ‘learner’ appeared to become ever more intense. He became vocal in his cries of pain and pleas for them to stop.

Despite his apparent anguish, the majority of participants continued to inflict, what they believed to be genuine pain.

A Failure to Replicate

Not surprisingly, this study has been hugely criticised on both ethical and technical grounds.

What is most interesting, to a psychohistorian like myself, is the fact that when attempts were made to replicated the study, not in the prestigious surroundings of Yale University’s psychology department, but in a shabby office block in the poorest part of town, far fewer participants were prepared to obey the experimenter.

From this it would seem that the context in which an order is given context plays an important role in the extent to which it will be unquestioningly carried out.

Location, location, location, the mantra of every real estate agent applies as powerfully to the effectiveness of political messages as to the price of properties.

Nürnberg and the Nazis

With this in mind, let&#;s travel back in time to when the medieval German city of Nürnberg became the location for the first of the Nazi Party Rallies.

The 11th-century city bedecked in all its Nazi finery&#;.

Nürnberg first attracted the attention Julius Streicher, a secondary school teacher and anti-Semitic Nazi rabble-rouser, when he was searching for a suitable venue for their rallies.

The city’s location, at the junction of seven main railway lines, made it easy for party members to travel there from all over Germany. Furthermore, because the old centre was relatively compact, even the fledgling Nazi Party’s modest membership could make an impressive show of strength as Storm Troopers paraded along the narrow streets and massed in the ornate squares.

Practicalities aside, the 11th-century city, with its steeply pitched roofs, narrow, winding cobbled streets and ancient bridges also provided the perfect backdrop against which to act out the Nazis&#; pseudo-mythological and romantic ‘volkish’ fantasies. It was in Nürnberg that the 19th-century poet Ludwig Tieck re-discovered German art and culture, and here, too, where the cobbler-poet Hans Sachs sang, in Wagner’s Die Meistersinger,  one of Hitler’s favourite operas, of the violence lurking in the heart of all men.

A City Transformed

Captivated by its history and architectural delights, Hitler and the Party set about transforming Nürnberg into a citadel of National Socialist culture.

On the south-east outskirts, they constructed a complex series of buildings and open-air arenas to provide dramatic backdrops for their annual rallies.

These included three gigantic parade-grounds, each capable of holding around half a million people; the Märzfeld (one of a number of arenas in which military manoeuvres were held under public gaze) and the Grosse Strasse, a mile-long, hundred-yard wide paved area along which massive formations of troops and armoured vehicles could parade.

They were, in the words of author Alan Wykes, ‘gigantic melodramas glorifying the implacable monster of Nazism.’ Ones in which ‘no cheap theatricality was omitted nor expense…In a blaze of searchlights, framed by towering banners, fireworks and mock battle, thunderous martial music and mesmeric chanting drown rationality – but not the Führer’s screeching, hate filled tirade.’

A Tented City

In preparation for their rallies, the Nazis erected a vast, tented city, capable of accommodating two hundred thousand visitors from all over Germany, on the city’s outskirts.

All aspects were meticulously planned with rules and procedures in place for everything from dealing with thunderbolts to unblocking latrines.

Every rally included the same key elements, each designed to mesmerise those present.

There was a ‘Cathedral of Light,’ created using anti-aircraft searchlights placed 12 metres apart and pointing skywards. These surrounded spectators with vertical columns of white light.

There were thundering Wagnerian overtures, stirring martial songs, multitudes of banners, streamers, flags and standards. Torchlight processions, massive bonfires, and magnificent firework displays.  Hundreds of thousands of goose-stepping marchers in highly disciplined formations.

Every major public building, and a majority of private homes, were festooned with huge Nazi flags, swastika banners and other insignia of National Socialism.

Against the backdrop of the Nürnberg stadium, its podium dominated by a gigantic swastika-bearing eagle, spectacles involving hundreds of thousands of the Nazi faithful reached their climax with the solemn ‘consecration of the colours’.

To a rendering of the Nazi hymn, the Horst Wessel marching song, new S.A. and S.S. banners and standards were carried forward to be reverently touched against the Blutfahne (Blood Banner). This was a tattered flag the Nazis claimed had been soaked with the blood of those slain in Hitler&#;s abortive Munich Putsch of

Stage Managed Messaging

The stage-managed rally messages were meticulously designed to create a mood of hysterical adoration among Hitler’s followers.

As the American journalist William Shirer noted in his Berlin Diary, ‘Like a Roman emperor Hitler rode into this medieval town…past solid phalanxes of wildly cheering Nazis who packed the narrow streets…Tens of thousands of Swastika flags blot out the Gothic beauties of the place, the facades of the old house, the gabled roofs. The streets, hardly wider than alleys, are a sea of brown and black uniforms…a mob of ten thousand hysterics who jammed the moat in front of Hitler’s hotel shouting: ‘We want our Führer’ …They looked up at him as if he were a Messiah, their faces transformed into something positively inhuman.’

At the heart of the spectacle was Adolf Hitler, with his intense blue eyes and brisk, aggressive gestures, working his magic on the masses and, through the use of repetitive rhythms of speech, generating in them an almost hypnotic state so they came away with ‘shining faces and dreamy eyes.’

‘No one in history has understood the basic principles of mass persuasion better than Hitler, and no organisation expended more labour and material in perfecting and using its techniques than did the Nazi Party during its turbulent and vicious life,’ comments author Barrie Pitt. ‘Every art, every subterfuge and contrivance were employed to hammer into the spectators and participants the message that Nazism was the only religion and Hitler its God.’

Now as Then

Although now over eighty years old, the techniques of effective persuasion, through the creation of uniquely special environments, remains as powerful, and as effective as ever.

The next time a politician you know holds a rally, count up how many of these well-established Nazi techniques he or she uses to try and infiltrate their political message into your mind while bypassing your brain.

Just because it is old historically doesn&#;t mean it is psychologically outdated.

A final warning from the past. For its six year long association with the Nazis, medieval Nürnberg was &#;punished&#; severely by the Allies through endless bombing raids. Raids which all but obliterated the ancient buildings and wiped the city from the face of the earth.

A fun fact people like to share about the Capitol Records building is, &#;Did you know it&#;s designed to look like a stack of records?&#; As the world&#;s first circular office building, it&#;s easy to draw that conclusion but it&#;s incorrect.

The iconic tower was designed by Welton Becket and Associates, with architect Louis Naidorf serving as lead designer. Naidorf himself said that if the building were home to an iHop, people would assume it was designed to look like a stack of pancakes. When Naidorf was drawing up the circular design, he wasn&#;t yet aware it was intended to house a record label. The unique shape came about because it was simply a more cost-efficient design.

Located at Vine St., the story tower was completed in and is a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument. Music legends like Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, The Beach Boys, and the Wrecking Crew are among artists who recorded some of the most influential music in history inside this beloved landmark. The recording facility, Capitol Studios, includes three main studios as well as a notorious subterranean &#;echo chamber&#; engineered feet underground by famed guitarist Les Paul.

Topping the building is a foot rooftop spire with a blinking red light. Those who can decipher Morse Code may notice that the light continuously blinks H-O-L-L-Y-W-O-O-D, one letter at a time. Ornamental lights are wrapped around the spire at Christmastime to form a glowing red Christmas tree, the lighting of which is Hollywood&#;s annual signal that the holidays have begun.

A vibrant mural featuring legendary jazz musicians Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, and many more can be seen on the south exterior wall of Capitol Records. Commissioned by the Los Angeles Jazz Society, artist Richard Wyatt created the mural in It has since been restored and fired onto 2, hand-glazed ceramic tiles to ensure the mural&#;s longevity.

The building is also largely recognizable because it&#;s frequently featured in film and TV. It can be spotted in Quentin Tarantino&#;s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Independence Day, Mad Men, Lana del Rey&#;s Doin&#; Time music video, and Grand Theft Auto V, to name just a few.

Along with the Pantages Theater, the Walk of Fame, and the Frolic Room, the Capitol Records building is part of what makes the intersection of Hollywood and Vine one of the most Instagram-worthy tourist attractions in L.A.

The Skinny on Alcohol

With the holiday parties and festivities upon us, I wanted to give you the skinny on alcohol! While there can be health benefits in small amounts, excessive alcohol intake is never healthy. The concern with some alcoholic beverages is the empty calories from carbohydrates. So, how can you still enjoy alcohol without the calories? Keep reading to get the skinny on alcohol!

The Skinny on Alcohol

I recently came across this chart below and was astonished at the number of calories in these popular mixed drinks. So, if I’m ruining your buzz, I’m sorry!

Shocking, right? One margarita alone has calories! Most of these calories come from the high sugar content of the mixers. Let’s look at the calories of straight alcohol:

Here are some suggestions that may help keep the calories down:

    • Consider using vodka, gin, or tequila, which have the fewest calories per serving.
    • Use mixers like club soda, Fever-Tree Light tonic water, Spindrift fruit-flavored seltzers or homemade iced tea. The options for calorie-free tea flavors are endless. Making a batch of sun tea is very easy to do. Place filtered water in a glass container. Depending on the size of your glass container, submerge tea bags, (larger pitchers will need more tea bags). Cover and allow to brew while in the sun for a few hours. Immediately refrigerate to cool the tea. The longer you leave the tea bags in the water, the stronger the flavor.
    •  Add fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs or spices to your chosen drink to boost the flavor. Here are some options to consider: cucumber, mint, basil, lavender, rosemary, lemon, lime, orange, peach, watermelon, grapefruit, mango, berries, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, ginger, cloves, spicy peppers, olives and/or citrus peels. Using the actual fruit rather than fruit juice as a mixer will lower the sugar content and the overall calorie count. I love adding a few drops of essential oils as flavoring too. Adding Stevia for a little sweetness is possible as well.

I hope these tips are helpful and will spark your curiosity to make the perfect cocktail. Remember to always drink responsibly when enjoying your drink of choice!

Cheers,

Cindy
